How did this come to our attention?

While Sierra Leone’s schools have made strides in encouraging academic success, modesty and respect are often overlooked in the development of students. As an organization we deem it necessary to education Students on the significance of modest behavior in their social and academic lives, leading to challenges such as inappropriate dressing, lack of self-discipline, and poor interpersonal relationships. These issues can adversely affect the overall school culture, academic outcomes, and social harmony within the learning environment and the community at large.

Inappropriate dress can distract students from their studies, leading to decreased focus and academic performance. It may shift attention away from lessons and create unnecessary tension in the classroom. This can further disrupt the overall atmosphere of the school. It may cause conflicts between students and teachers, and create division among peers based on appearance. Schools aim to foster an environment where everyone feels equal and comfortable, because of the trend in the fashion world, schools are faced with challenges relating to indecent dress and exposure.

Some forms of indecent dressing may contribute to the sexualization or objectification of students, especially in environments where students are still developing. This can lead to uncomfortable situations or even instances of harassment from their peer or senior.

Schools often have dress codes to promote discipline, respect, and professionalism. Indecent dressing challenges the authority of these codes and may promote a lack of respect for school rules and norms.

Parents as key plays in school system often neglect their roles, leaving the burden on the school authorities to combat some of these issues. In other to help mitigate these challenges, Sierra Leone Friends of Humanity aim at creating awareness in schools, communities and work with school authorities to implement clear, fair dress codes and foster a school that supports both personal expression and academic focus.
