How did this come to our attention?

As a Humanitarian organization it is our responsibility to help combat the ravaging effects of Kush in our country. Many young potentials have died, some drop out of learning institutions while others are faced with difficult health problems as a result of the addiction to” Kush”. According to Global Initiative report, “since 2022 over a thousand (1000) people have died as a result of kush addiction” in Sierra Leone. In 2024 the Government of Sierra Leone declared national emergency over the use of drug. Our country is considered the epicenter for kush in West Africa. In a country where 75% of our population are young people within the age of 19 to 35 years, a good number of them are addicted to Kush. It is on this backdrop that we as a Humanitarian organization see the need for urgent intervention to help address the situation which many of our young people face.

The Youth Drug Rehabilitation and Empowerment Program (YDRP) designed by Sierra Leones Friends of Humanity to provide holistic support to young individuals affected by drug abuse through comprehensive rehabilitation strategies that focus on physical, emotional, and social recovery.

Objectives
The primary objective of the YDRP is to assist young individuals in overcoming substance abuse, reintegrating into society, and live healthy, productive life. The program will focus on the following specific goals:

  1. To provide individualized rehabilitation services for youth addicted to kush.
  2. To offer counseling and therapy to address the psychological impact of addiction.
  3. To enhance the skills and confidence of young people, enabling them to re-enter educational, professional, and social environments.
  4. To raise awareness and provide preventive education to vulnerable youth and their communities about the risks of drug abuse.

Expected Outcome

  • 1. Reduced Drug Dependency: A significant proportion of the youth participants will achieve abstinence from drugs and demonstrate improved psychological well-being.
  • 2. Successful Reintegration into Society: Participants will have the necessary skills, education, and support to reintegrate into society as productive members, whether in educational settings, the workforce, or their communities.
  • 3. Long-Term Preventative Impact: Increased awareness and prevention education will contribute to a reduction in drug abuse rates among the youth in the target community, creating a ripple effect of awareness and behavior change.
